Update Tuesday 24th March

Ayamonte Beach

There has been a total of 6,584 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases is now at 39,676. The number of patients in intensive care is 2,636 and the number of deaths has now reached 2,696. The number of people who have recovered is 3,794.

Meanwhile in Andalusia there are 2,471 confirmed cases of which 1,132 are in hospital 102 are intensive care and 1,252 are in quarantine and there have been 87 deaths (Malaga 26, Jaen 12, Granada 21, Cordoba 6, Cadiz 3, Seville 5, Almeria 5, Huelva 1). In Seville there are 427 cases with 200 of those in hospital, the remaining 214 are in quarantine in their own homes, 13 deaths while 5 have been cured.

In Huelva there are 70 cases, this being an increase of 12 new cases today, 38 are in hospital and 31 are in quarantine in their own homes. The good news is that two have been sent home from hospital and another two have been confirmed cured.

153 patients have now been sent home from hospital in Andalusia to pass the rest of their quarantine in their own homes and there is a total of 102 people in intensive care in all of Andalusia and 66 have been cured

Update Monday 23rd March

Older peopleThere has been a total of 4,517 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 33,089. The number of patients in intensive care is 2,355 and the number of deaths has now reached 2,182. The number of people who have recovered is 3,355.

Meanwhile in Andalusia there are 1,961 confirmed cases of which 744 are in hospital 77 are intensive care and 1,159 are in quarantine and there have been 58  deaths (Malaga 21, Jaen 5, Granada 17, Cordoba 4, Cadiz 3, Seville 5, Almeria 2, Huelva 1). In Seville there are 351 cases with 152 of those in hospital, the remaining 194 are in quarantine in their own homes, 5 deaths while 5 have been cured.

In Huelva there are 58 cases, this being an increase of 11 new cases today, 29 are in hospital and 28 are in quarantine in their own homes. Sadly, Huelva reports its first death today of a 79-year-old man.

104 patients have now been sent home from hospital in Andalusia to pass the rest of their quarantine in their own homes and there is a total of 77 people in intensive care in all of Andalusia.

The Ministry for Health published some interesting information on the infection of Covid-19 per age group and what was the mortality for each age group taken from a sample of 18,959. The current mortality rate is 6.6% but that is expected to drop as the number of tests increases, the main reason for the high mortality rate is due to many cases going undetected.

Currently over 80 per cent of all deaths in Spain is in people 70 or over, that is not to say that younger people are not at risk but more to say extra precaution needs to be taken to not spread the virus to this age group.

Update Sunday 22nd March

Today the President of Spain Pedro Sanchez announced that the current lockdown will be extended by another 15 days until the 11th of April. This measure will be presented to Congress early next week where it will be approved.

Dr Fernando Simon Soria Director of the Centre for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies for the Ministry of Health during a press conference today gave more details on the Covid 19 outbreak. Spain has carried out over 355,000 tests so far and 12 per cent of all positive cases are that of healthcare workers who are working on the frontline to battle against this outbreak. So, 3,475 healthcare workers have tested positive, that is 10 per cent of the current workforce. Dr Fernando Simon Soria confirmed that between 15-20,000 tests are carried out on a daily basis and tests are carried out mainly on healthcare workers and patients with symptoms however he stressed the importance of testing and that testing will become more widely available to diagnose patients quicker.President Pedro Sanchez

Laurentino Ceña the Operations Director of the Guardia Civil also outlined the importance of the population to follow the laws laid down by the decree. A total of 18 people have been arrested for not complying and 14,785 have been fined for not staying at home. Ceña said “Don’t doubt that we will use the measures needed to ensue that the laws regarding mobility and transport are respected during this lockdown”.

The Director of the National Police Force Jose Angel Gonzalez with 78,000 agents under his command said that his agents have been informed how to deal with each situation in the current state of emergency. The national police force has arrested 74 people since the state of emergency came into vigor and have fined over 23,000. Jose Angel Gonzalez also explained that while the borders are closed apart from the specific cases outlined in the decree that a total of 345 vehicles were denied entry into Spain.

There has been a total of 3,646 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 28,572. The number of patients in intensive care is 1,785 and the number of deaths has now reached 1,720. The number of people who have recovered is 2,575

Meanwhile in Andalusia there are 1,725 confirmed cases of which 724 are in hospital 55 are intensive care and 972 are in quarantine and there have been 47 deaths (Malaga 21, Jaen 3, Granada 13, Cordoba 3, Cadiz 2, Seville 4, Almeria 1). In Seville there are 295 cases with 126 of those in hospital, the remaining 165 are in quarantine in their own homes, 4 deaths while 1 has been cured.

In Huelva there are 47 cases, this being an increase of ten new cases today, 24 are in hospital and 23 are in quarantine in their own homes.

91 patients have now been sent home from hospital in Andalusia to pass the rest of their quarantine in their own homes and there is a total of 55 people in intensive care in all of Andalusia.

With the arrival with rapid test kits, people will be able to get the test done without leaving their cars. Testing centres have been set up in Cádiz (Campo de Gibraltar y Jerez), Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga y Sevilla (city, Aljarafe y Osuna) and new testing centres will be announced. Anyone who needs to take the test must first be showing symptoms and contact the telephone number 900400061 and from there you will given instructions.

Update Saturday 21st March

There has been a total of 4,946 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 24,926. The number of patients in intensive care is 1,612 and the number of deaths has now reached 1,326. The number of people who have recovered is 2,125

Meanwhile in Andalusia there are 1,515 confirmed cases of which 605 are in hospital 53 are intensive care and 972 are in quarantine and there have been 40 deaths (Malaga 20, Jaen 2, Granada 13, Cordoba 3, Seville 2). In Seville there are 245 cases with 89 of those in hospital, the remaining 154 are in quarantine in their own homes, 2 death while 1 has been cured.

In Huelva there are 37 cases, this being an increase of one new case today, 16 are in hospital and 21 are in quarantine in their own homes.covid test

72 patients have now been sent home from hospital in Andalusia to pass the rest of their quarantine in their own homes and there is a total of 53 people in intensive care in all of Andalusia.

In Ayamonte, like everywhere else in Andalusia, the Funeral home has been closed. Wakes or Vigils are forbidden and on the death of a loved one the funeral directors will take the coffin to the funeral home and it will remain there until burial can take place.

Rapid testing kits are being delivered to all hospitals throughout Spain today and with these tests within 15 minutes the result can be obtained. Up until now the test have been taking twenty -four hours to confirm. Spain has bought 640,000 rapid tests and there are four companies in Spain who are currently manufacturing kits and it is expected that there will be a fifth company who can also start making these tests to bring the capacity of test kits to over a million within a week.

Update Friday 20th March

There have been a total of 2,833 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 19,980. The number of patients in intensive care is 1,141 and the number of deaths has now reached 1,002. The number of people who have recovered is 1,585

Meanwhile in Andalusia there are 1,287 confirmed cases of which 367 are in hospital 38 are intensive care and 890 are in quarantine and there have been 30 deaths (Malaga 17, Jaen 2, Granada 10, Seville 1). In Seville there are 190 cases with 64 of those in hospital, the remaining 125 are in quarantine in their own homes, 1 death while 1 has been cured.

In Huelva there are 36 cases, this being an increase of 13 new cases today, 13 are in hospital and 23 are in quarantine in their own homes.

72 patients have now been sent home from hospital in Andalucia to pass the rest of their quarantine in their own homes.

The Junta de Andalucia also announced today two contingency plans which will be activated when Andalusia reaches 9,000 confirmed cases and another should we reach 15,000 cases. With these plans they will use hotels, mainly to deal with the patients who are positive but don't need intensive medical care or are recovering. Under the plans they will activate 7,430 health care workers (3,378 doctors and 4,052 nurses).

The Junta have declared that they have been working on these plans for over a month and according to their statistics if they reach 9,000 cases there will be 2,026 people hospitalised of which 610 will be in intensive care. If we reach 15,000 cases here will be 2,970 people hospitalised of which 890 will be in intensive care.

To cope with the surge in patients both public and private hospitals will be activated and all private and public clinics as well as old folks homes so they will have a capacity or beds for 20,672. Hostels and youth centres and hotels will also carry an overflow ofpatients so that the final number of beds available will be 26,097. Hotels which are to be medicalised will make 1,175 beds available of which 50 will be made available in Huelva.

Jesus Aguirre the minister for Health & Families for the Junat de Andalucia said that there will be over 1100 ventilators available for patients. " We have to be prepared for the worst and when you prepare for the worst and it doesn't happen then that will be fantastic, we are prepared and we will continue to be ready".

Meanwhile in Ayamonte the labours of disinfecting the streets has intensified both in the town and in the neighbourhoods of Canela and Costa Esuri.

Update Thursday 19th March

There have been a total of 3,431 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 17,147. The number of patients in intensive care is 939 and the number of deaths has now reached 767.The number of people who have recovered is 1107

Meanwhile in Andalusia there are 1008 confirmed cases of which 307 are in hospital 25 are intensive care and 678 are in quarantine and there have been 23 deaths (Malaga 13, Jaen 2, Granada 7, Seville 1). In Seville there are 138 cases with 42 of those in hospital, the remaining 79 are in quarantine in their own homes, 1 death while 1 has been cured.cleaning

In Huelva there are 23 cases, this being an increase of 9 new cases today, 15 are in hospital and 8 are in quarantine in their own homes.

Ayamonte is still without a single confirmed case and this is thanks to everyone staying in their homes. The Town Hall have increased their cleaning schedules and are disinfecting areas on a daily basis where there is a big footfall ( enterances to shops, health centres and Pharmacies). Covid 19 Update Wednesday 18th March

There have been a total of 2,538 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 13,716. The number of patients in intensive care is 774 and the number of deaths has now reached 598.The number of people who have recovered is 1081

Meanwhile in Andalucia there are 859 confirmed cases of which 223 are in hospital and 616 are in quarantine and there have been 19 deaths ( Malaga 10, Jaen 2,Granada 6, Seville 1). In Seville there are 123 cases with 42 of those in hospital, the remaining 79 are in quarantine in their own homes, 1 death while 1 has been cured.

In Huelva there are 14 cases,this being an increase of 8 new cases today, 4 are in hospital and 10 are in quarantine in their own homes.

Covid 19 Update Tuesday 17th March

There have been a total of 1,987 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 11,178. The number of patients in intensive care is 563 and the number of deaths has now reached 491.The number of people who have recovered is 1028

Meanwhile in Andalucia there are 683 confirmed cases and 11 deaths ( Malaga 6, Jaen 2,Granada 2 Seville 1). In Seville there are 100 cases with 34 of those in hospital of which 9 are in intensive care, the remaining 64 are in quarantine in their own homes, 1 death while 1 has been cured.

In Huelva there are 8 cases,this being an increase of 2 new cases today, one of the patients is now in intensive care while the other 7 are in hospital.

Covid 19 Update Monday 16th March

There have been a total of 1,438 new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 9,191. The number of patients in intensive care is 432 and the number of deaths has now reached 309.

Meanwhile in Andalucia there are 554 confirmed cases and 7 deaths ( Malaga 5, Jaen 2). In Seville there are 84 cases with 21 of those in hospital of which 9 are in intensive care, the remaining 53 are in quarantine in their own homes while 1 has been cured.

In Huelva there are 6 cases,this number has not changed for the last two days however one of the patients is now in intensive care while the other 5 are now in hospital.

Covid 19 Update Sunday 15th March

There have been a total of two thousand new cases declared today and the total confirmed cases now at 7,753. The number of patients in intensive care is 382 and the number of deaths has now reached 288.

Meanwhile in Andalucia there are 437 confirmed cases and 6 deaths ( Malaga 4, Jaen 2). In Seville there are 62 cases with 15 of those in hospital of which 4 are in intensive care, the remaining 42 are in quarantine in their own homes while 1 has been cured.

In Huelva there are 6 cases, so no change today and those 6 people are in quarantine in their own homes.

Covid 19 Update Saturday 14th March

As was to be expected with the influx of people from other communities to Huelva, there has been an increase in the number of confirmed positives for Covid-19 to 6 confirmed cases. The location of these two new cases has also been confirmed. The first was in Punta Umbria while the second is in Valverde.

Punta Umbria Town Hall have confirmed this case and have said that the person is following the protocol and isolated in their home. In a statement PUnta Umbria Town Hall have said: We request the utmost responsibilty and maturity from the Citizens of Punta Umbria and its visitors to take extreme precaution and avoid going outside. We fully trust the protocols and ourn health services and their professionals. Please stay at home.

Meanwhile in Andalusia the number of confirmed cases is now at 376 with a total of 5 deaths (Malaga 3 and Jaen 2). Currently the confirmed cases in each Province is as follows: Malaga 128, Jaen 34, Seville 29, Cadiz 21, Granada 22, Cordoba 18, Almeria 13, Huelva 6

As from Monday at 8am the Real Decree will be published on the Official State Bulletin and become law. All of Spain will be under State of alarm and must follow the laws set down by the decree.

I am going to give you a point by point breakdown of the Decree in a typical question in answer format. This is to simplify the 15-page document

Why has the State Of Alarm been declared?

The State of Alarm has been declared so Spain can deal most effectively with the outbreak of the Coronavirus Covid -19

Who is the competent Authority during the State of Alarm?

The Spanish government is the competent authority to carry out all the functions outlined in the decree. The following ministries will have their respective responsibilities:

  • Ministry of Defence
  • Ministry of Interior
  • Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agendas
  • Ministry for Health

The Defence Forces, autonomous and local police as well as the local governments will all come under direct orders from the ministry of interior when needed for the protection of the population, property and places.

How is movement limited?

During the validity of the State of Alarm, citizens will only be able to circulate along the roads for public use to carry out the following activities:

  • Acquisition of food, pharmaceuticals and necessities.
  • Assistance to health centres.
  • Travel to the workplace to carry out their work, professional or business provision.
  • Return to the place of habitual residence.
  • Assistance and care for the elderly, minors, dependents, people with disabilities or especially vulnerable people.
  • Displacement to financial entities
  • Due to force majeure or need.
  • Any other activity of an analogous nature duly justified.

Circulation is also permitted to go to petrol station to fill up.

Can I work from home?

The decree states that all employers where possible must provide means by which their employees can work from home.

What about schools and universities?

All classes of every type have been suspended until further notice and during this time educative activities will be carried out online where possible.

Will all the shops, bars and restaurants be closed?

All establishments which may be a focus of infection are to be closed. However, businesses or commercial establishments whose opening is permitted must be strictly necessary so that consumers can purchase food and basic necessities, the possibility of consuming products in the establishments themselves being suspended. In any case, crowds will be avoided, and consumers and employees will be controlled to maintain the safety distance of at least one meter in order to avoid possible contagion. Cafeterias and restaurants will be closed to the public, being able to exclusively provide home delivery services. 

Are all concerts/ festivals cancelled?

The opening to the public of the premises and establishments in which public shows take place, the cultural and artistic facilities and the sports and leisure activities are suspended. Cafeterias and restaurants will be closed to the public, being able to exclusively provide home delivery services. The festivals, parades and popular festivals are also suspended.

Can you still attend Mass, Weddings or Funerals?

Attendance at places of worship and civil and religious ceremonies, including funerals, are conditional on the adoption of organizational measures consisting of avoiding crowds, depending on the dimensions and characteristics of the places, in such a way as to guarantee attendees the possibility of respecting the distance between them of at least one metre.

Is the local Health Centre still open?

All health centres and workers will be under the direct orders of the Minister of Health as necessary for the protection of people, property and places, and may impose extraordinary services for their duration or nature. The Minister of Health reserves the exercise of all the powers that are necessary to guarantee cohesion and equity in the provision of said service. This measure will also guarantee the possibility of determining the best distribution in the territory of all technical and personal resources, in accordance with the needs that are revealed in the management of this health crisis. The delegated competent authorities shall exercise their powers to ensure that personnel and military health centres and establishments contribute to strengthening the national health system throughout the national territory. Likewise, the Minister of Health may exercise those powers that are necessary for these purposes with respect to private health centres.

Will the food supply chain be affected?

 The competent authorities shall take the necessary measures to guarantee:

  • The food supply in the places of consumption and the operation of the services of the production centres, allowing the distribution of food from the origin to the commercial establishments for sale to the consumer, including warehouses, logistic centres and destination markets. In particular, when it is necessary for security reasons, the accompaniment of the vehicles that carry the mentioned goods may be agreed.
  • When necessary, the establishment of sanitary corridors to allow the entry and exit of people, raw materials and processed products destined for or coming from establishments where food is produced, including farms, animal feed factories and slaughterhouses. Likewise, the competent authorities may agree on the intervention of companies or services, as well as the mobilization of the security forces and bodies of the State and the Armed Forces in order to ensure the proper functioning of the provisions of this article.

Can produce be imported?

The competent authorities shall adopt the necessary measures to guarantee customs transit at the points of entry or border inspection points located in ports or airports. In this regard, priority products will be addressed.

Will there be gas, electricity or petrol shortages?

The competent authority may adopt the necessary measures to guarantee the supply of electricity, petroleum products, as well as natural gas.

Covid 19 Update Friday 13th March

I have decided to keep a daily blog with updates on what is happening both locally in Ayamonte and in Huelva and Andalusia regarding the Covid 19. This is not to alarm anyone in any way but simply to keep you informed about what the official organisms are reporting and to try and curb the rumour mill that comes with these types of outbreaks.

First and foremost, the Guidelines set out by the Town Hall of Ayamonte are the ones you should follow:

  • Wash hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water or an alcohol-based solution.
  • When coughing cover your mouth with a Kleenex or cough into your elbow.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid contact with people who are showing signs of respiratory illnesses (coughing / sneezing)
  • Maintain a safe distance of over one metre with people with symptoms of severe respiratory infections.

The most common symptoms of Coronavirus are Fever, cough and the sensation of breathlessness. If you think you may be infected or have arrived from or been in contact with a person who is in a high-risk area contact this Telephone number 900 400 061 do not go directly to the hospital or nearest health centre. For other emergencies use these telephone numbers 061 or 112.

All Schools and Universities are now closed and will be so until the end of March. It is important to note that these children and students are not on holidays and where possible should remain at home.

The President of Spain Pedro Sanchez announced today the whole country is entering a state of Alarm as of Saturday 14th March 2020,due to the Coronavirus outbreak. A state of Alarm means that the government can:

Limit the circulation of people and vehicles.

Carry out searches and impound items

Take over factories, workshops and premises for the use of the ministry

Limit the use of services or products to ensure the provision of basic consumer goods.

The state of Alarm will last for 15 days after which it can only be extended by the Congress approval. The last time Spain announced a State of Alarm was when the air traffic controllers went on strike in Dec 2010.

In Andalusia there have been 219 confirmed cases as of 11.00 today Friday, Malaga 111, Jaen 30, Seville 25, Cadiz 19, Granada 14, Almeria 9 and Huelva 4. There has been one death in Andalucia of a person in their 70’s who had been hospitalised in Malaga for the last two months with underlying health problems

In Huelva there are 4 confirmed cases of Covid 19 and zero deaths as per Junta de Andalucia reports today at 18.00. The first case was declared at the beginning of this week with a second case confirmed Thursday and two new cases declared today.

 

Access to the beaches in Ayamonte has now been closed and the Town Hall has asked people to please stay at home.
